John McEvoy

John McEvoy, born in Birmingham of Roscommon parents. has a huge interest in the flute/fiddle playing of the Sligo, Roscommon, Leitrim region. He has established himself as an outstanding exponent of the North Connacht style of fiddle playing. John’s early musical influences included fiddle players such as
Kevin and Jack Cullen and Paddy Ryan, all of whom hailed from Roscommon.

John settled in Dublin in the late 1970’s and quickly became involved in the
thriving Dublin music scene and has been associated with The Willie Clancy Summer School since the early 1980’s. He has recorded and performed with a number of groups and bands including Bakerswell (with whom he recorded an album of the the same name in the eighties), Kelp and Providence. His solo CD ‘Returning’ was released in 1998 and ‘The Kilmore Fancy’ with his sister flute-player Catherine McEvoy was released in 2004 to much critical acclaim.

Over the past few years John has been playing regularly with Roscommon flute player JohnWynne as ‘Pride of the West’ following the release of their very popular CD of fiddle/flute music in the Roscommon/Sligo tradition. John is also much sought after as a fiddle teacher and has performed regularly at festivals and summer schools throughout Ireland, Europe and North America.

Testimonials

Former Student

Of all the wonderful aspects of the retreat, though, I think the most wonderful and the most memorable was seeing the effect it had on my son. Andrew really got into the music and into playing in a way that I have never seen in him. When we got home, he and I told the rest of the family about our experiences and then went right out into the front yard and started playing music. No amount of money
