As part of your participation at the O’Flaherty Retreat, we ask our instructors to choose one extracurricular activity that will benefit any attending student, not just the students of your particular course. By the way, some instructors choose to do more than one, and that’s fine with us and wonderful for our students, but certainly not required. Here are descriptions of each:
This is a one-hour presentation given on a topic that might be of interest to many of our students. The topics have ranged from Irish music history to regional styles of Irish music, key figures in Irish music to learning methods, exploring new versus past ways of playing Irish music. For examples of these classes, go to Past Enrichment Classes. We prefer that these classes not be instrument specific if possible so that anyone who attends can benefit. If you have a general topic and idea of what you want to cover, we will be happy to write the description for you. We will send it to you before we publish it so you can change it to your liking. By the way, we prefer this activity because we want our students to learn about Irish music beyond learning their instruments. Our instructors tend to have knowledge and experiences that they can readily share.
This is a one-hour performance/exposition of your music — a time to talk about who influenced your playing/learning, discuss your style of playing, demonstrate the intricacies of your instrument, share your favorite stories, tunes or songs, etc. The design of this activity is to enable other students beside your regular class students to hear you discuss and perform Irish music in a more intimate setting.
Co-Lead a Session
This is a one-hour session held in the afternoon period before dinner. If possible, we will partner you with another instructor to lead a session among students. Normally, instructors let the students suggest some of the tunes to play, but you are free to start whatever tunes you like.
Audio Visual Support
We have a large variety of audio visual equipment and materials available for your course classes and any of the above extracurricular activities. In advance of the retreat, our AV Team will contact you to determine your needs for all of your activities. We have erase boards, projectors and screens, laptops, cameras, MP3 players, CD and cassette tape players, powered speakers, sound systems, hookups, converters, and possibly anything you’d need to communicate or present. We also have a copier available for your printing needs.
If you have a question about any of the extracurricular activities on specific AV concerns, please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
