The O’Flaherty Irish Music Retreat offers a number of activities related to Irish dancing including classes, workshops and ceilis. They are open to all of our students regardless of ability.
Sean-Nós Dancing Classes
Instructor: Maldon Meehan

sean-nós dancing at an instructor concert in 2015.
Sean-nós (“old style”) Irish dance is a joyful expression of movement and sound. Considered to be one of the earliest forms of Irish dancing, sean-nós is an improvised solo style, with footwork danced close-to-the-floor, a relaxed upper body, and a playful dialogue between the dance and the music. In this class, students will enjoy listening and responding to traditional Irish music while gaining confidence as percussive dancers. The class will focus on timing, technique, building a body of basic steps, and developing a personal style. Please wear comfortable shoes with a smooth hard sole (leather or hard rubber soles are preferred — please no taps or fiberglass). Dancers are encouraged to bring water, a notebook, and a recording device.
Ceili Dance Workshops
Presenter: TBA

Whether you are completely new to Irish social dancing or you’re one who never passes up an opportunity to dance, these workshops are for you. Experience how Irish tunes and dances fit together like a match made in heaven. Do you need to energize for your next music class? Come learn a set dance or two! With this under your belt you’ll be ready to join in the big Saturday night ceili.
Ceilis
Caller: TBA
Music provided by Lone Star Ceili Band

There are two ceilis held during our camp. We have a “Kick-Off Ceili” on Thursday evening at 8:30 p.m. to celebrate the start of our event and our “Lone Star Ceili” on Saturday evening after the instructor concerts (around 9:30 p.m.). Both dances are called by our dance instructor Jackie O’Riley and are open to all levels. Playing music for the ceilis will be the Lone Star Ceili Band.
Step Swap
Facilitator: Maldon Meehan
Dancers like to dance and, when they’re not dancing, they like to discuss dancing, so we have set aside time on Friday night to do both. The “Step Swap” is what the name implies — an opportunity for dancers to share their favorite dance steps.
